DeKalb Toddler Gardens Receive Grant Funding for Local Parks

DEKALB – The DeKalb Regional Office of Education received a $10,000 ComEd and Openlands Green Region Grant, matched with $5,000 locally, to improve toddler gardens across DeKalb County. The funding will enhance spaces at Chamberlain Park in Genoa, Welsh Park in DeKalb, and Knights Park in Sandwich, providing young children and families opportunities to explore nature through sensory boards, pollinator gardens, and science-based activities.

“We’re really trying to bring science as well as a love of our earth to children at the very youngest age,” said Amanda Christensen, regional superintendent of the DeKalb Regional Office of Education.

The gardens are part of BASICS DeKalb County, which connects early childhood learning with outdoor exploration.
