DeKalb to Consider Downtown Entertainment District

DEKALB — DeKalb will consider a proposed pilot entertainment district in the central business district. The plan would allow patrons of participating businesses to carry one alcoholic drink in a city approved cup within a defined area. The district would run from North First Street to North Fourth Street and from East Locust Street to the Union Pacific right of way, with an exception for a property at North Fourth Street and East Locust Street. Participation would be voluntary, and businesses that opt in would register with the city and display signage. Only patrons aged 21 and older with wristbands could carry drinks.

Beverages would be limited to approved cups, and bottles, cans, and glass would not be allowed. Alcohol could not be brought into or taken out of the district. Drinks would need to be discarded before leaving the area. Proposed hours are Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Weekend hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Cup sales would end at 9:30 p.m.  The topic is on the agenda for this evening’s DeKalb City Council meeting.
