DeKalb Sees Nearly 30% Drop in Violent Crime

DEKALB – The City of DeKalb reported a nearly 30% reduction in violent crime since 2022, according to the Police Department’s annual report delivered to the City Council last week. Chief David Byrd said that the Officers deserve the credit for the safety of the community.

“That is because of the hard work that these officers are doing on a daily basis,” he said. “High visibility due to increased staffing has definitely made an impact on this type of violent crime.”

He noted a decrease in confirmed shots fired calls from 24 in 2023 to 16 in 2024, with no murders occurring last year. Overall violent crime dropped by 8.8% from 2023 and 29.9% from 2022.
