DEKALB — Two people were evaluated for smoke inhalation and one resident was taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital after a fire Tuesday afternoon at a home in the 900 block of Market Street in DeKalb. The DeKalb Fire Department was called around 1:14 p.m. and found smoke coming from the two story home. Firefighters located the fire in the kitchen and brought it under control within 15 minutes. Crews assisted a resident who was unable to leave the home and helped them to safety along with DeKalb police officers. No other occupants were found inside. Officials said the fire was caused by an unattended cooking appliance and was ruled accidental. Damage was estimated at $35,000. One resident was transported to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital, while another resident and a police officer were evaluated at the scene and declined further treatment. The home was left uninhabitable. The Red Cross and Family Service Agency are assisting the displaced occupants. No firefighters were injured.
