DEKALB — Firefighters from DeKalb and surrounding communities responded to a house fire in the 300 block of West Hillcrest Drive on Thursday afternoon. The fire, which began in the kitchen, caused an estimated $80,000 in damage. Upon arrival, firefighters found visible smoke from a second-story window and upgraded the response to a working fire. Crews contained the blaze in about 15 minutes. No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters. A family of five was displaced but found alternative housing with relatives. Firefighters spent an additional 90 minutes on-site to search for hot spots and ventilate the building. The fire’s cause is under investigation.
