DEKALB — The DeKalb City Council last week gave first approval to a special use permit for a new drive through restaurant at 2151 Sycamore Road in the former Advance Auto Parts building. The project includes a Tropical Smoothie Cafe along with building changes to add a drive through lane and patio space. Council members also reviewed proposed updates to the city’s Unified Development Ordinance involving zoning, accessory structures, solar farms, subdivisions, floodplain rules, and sign regulations. City staff said the revisions would correct errors, improve clarity, and make the rules easier to apply. The council also considered creating a new Event Venue liquor license classification for the McCabe’s building at 323 East Lincoln Highway. The proposal would allow alcohol sales during events and set rules for security, underage guests, entertainment, and event operations.
