Davis Junction Water Treatment Plant Faces Costly Decision on Filter Rehabilitation

DAVIS JUNCTION – The Village of Davis Junction is evaluating options for rehabilitating its water treatment plant’s iron filter, with costs ranging significantly. A proposal from Tonka Water for a full rehabilitation, including materials and labor, is just under $400,000. In contrast, replacing the filter with a new one would cost $802,000 for equipment alone, not accounting for additional labor and demolition. The rehabilitation would involve modifications that allow for necessary repairs and painting of the steel structure, extending the filter’s life by 15 to 20 years. Matt Hanson, Vice President of Willett Hoffman and Associates, said rehabilitation would be a complicated task.

“Right now we’ve got an area that we can’t get at to repair,” he said. “So basically, you think about it, the underdrain and the filter section are two separate sections. When they do this, the underdrain plate’s coming out, so these two sections become one now. Now you’ve got some area to get into where we can weld and try to find the areas on the base plate that are leaking, repair those, and then we’ve got enough room in there to blast and paint the steel structure, just like we would your water tower.”
