COMPTON – A Compton man faces multiple charges after a reported disturbance with gunfire in rural Lee County on Sunday. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 1:05 p.m. to the 500 block of Carnahan Road after a 911 call reported an alleged 38-year-old intoxicated man involved in a fight who fired shots at another person. Authorities said the suspect left the scene in a vehicle. A deputy located a matching vehicle at about 1:11 p.m. on Chicago Road near German Road and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, identified as Matthew L. Steele of Compton, was taken into custody. Investigators said Steele struck one person and pushed another family member to the ground during the altercation. He then left and returned with a firearm before firing several shots at a person who was leaving the property in a vehicle. The victim was not hit. Deputies recovered a firearm and several spent shell casings at the scene. Steele was charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card, aggravated assault involving discharge of a firearm, domestic battery, battery, and driving under the influence of alcohol. He remains in the Lee County Jail after being denied pretrial release.
