Byron to Break Ground on $26.58 Million Wastewater Treatment Plant

BYRON – The City of Byron will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 11 at 3:30 p.m. for a major upgrade to its wastewater treatment plant. Whittaker Construction of Earlville submitted the low bid of $26.58 million for the project, below the engineer’s $27.5 million estimate. The project will replace aging treatment units and improve the quality of treated wastewater before it is discharged. New treatment units will be built on higher ground outside the apparent Rock River flood plain. The existing biological treatment process will be replaced with an advanced Moving Bed Bio Reactor system, while the secondary clarification process will be replaced with drum filters. The project also includes replacement of the plant’s maintenance building.
