BYRON – The Byron City Engineer Jason Stoll announced that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency gave the city a high score on an upcoming project, leading the way for up to $30 million in loans, including $4.5 million in potential principal forgiveness. The project, a major reconstruction of the aging wastewater treatment plant, began in 2021 with a facilities study.
Stoll said the plan is to replace and rehabilitate outdated systems.
“It’s a full renovation of the existing treatment plant, which some of the treatment processes in there go back all the way to the 1930’s,” he said. “They’re still in operation. So there’s a lot of really old components of that plant that are going to be coming out and replaced with new.”
Construction could begin as early as spring 2026, pending IEPA bid approval.
