Byron Considers Stricter Alcohol Rules for Bartenders

BYRON – The Byron City Council is considering new regulations for bartenders, including an ordinance to prohibit employees from consuming alcohol while on duty and a local ordinance for alcohol server training. The proposed rules, which will be discussed at the next meeting, would create a level of local enforcement to the state-mandated Basset server training. Byron Police Chief Jeremy Boehle said that the new ordinance would make the local establishments more responsible.

“The Bassett training is obviously required by state statute. We’ve learned that there are some employees that have not done that training in order for us to make sure that liquor license holders know that this is a requirement,” he said. “We’ll put it into our ordinance and hold them accountable themselves instead of just the employee being able to revoke and suspend their license.”

The city is also taking steps to hold liquor license holders responsible for ensuring their staff doesn’t consume on the job.

“We just feel like it’s time to make sure that the people that are checking other people have not been consuming alcohol or THC to impair themselves.”
