SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House on Friday unanimously approved House Bill 2802, sponsored by House Minority Leader Tony McCombie (R-Savanna), which encourages student participation in STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—by allowing work-based learning and youth apprenticeship programs. Developed with the state board of education, the measure sets up an approval process for students to take part in these activities.
McCombie said it was important that the bill includes provisions to make up missed coursework without penalty.
“I saw an opportunity to strengthen language around excused absences for students who participate in work-based learning experiences, especially those that are tied to FFA, CTE and other youth leadership organizations,” she said.
The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
