SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is accepting applications for Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) grants from February 14th through April 14th. These grants provide funding to help rural fire departments organize, train, and equip their personnel, enhancing their ability to prevent and suppress fires, particularly in rural areas. The VFA program, supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, reimburses 50% of project costs, up to $10,000. Grants can fund equipment such as radios, hoses, protective gear, and chainsaws. In 2024, $212,811 was awarded to 30 Illinois projects. For more details, visit the IDNR grants website.
