Illinois Lawmakers Propose Renaming VA Clinic for Civil War Hero

WASHINGTON — Representative Darin LaHood joined by the full Illinois Congressional Delegation, introduced legislation to rename the Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in Bloomington, Illinois, in honor of Andrew Jackson Smith, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. Smith, born into slavery, later joined the Union Army and was recognized for bravery at the Battle of Honey Hill. The bill would designate the facility as the “Andrew Jackson Smith Medal of Honor Department of Veterans Affairs Clinic” to honor his service and legacy. Smith received the Medal of Honor posthumously in 2001.
