Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Health Department reported Tuesday that mosquitoes collected in Sycamore have tested positive for West Nile virus. This marks the second positive test in the county this year, though no human cases have been reported. The virus is spread to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which become carriers after feeding on infected birds. Most people infected show no symptoms, but some may experience fever, headache, or more serious complications such as encephalitis or meningitis. Health officials are encouraging residents to prevent mosquito bites by using repellent, wearing protective clothing, removing standing water, and ensuring window and door screens are secure.
