SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois State Board of Education has launched the Purple Star School program to recognize schools that support military connected students and their families. Officials said the program highlights efforts to help students manage frequent school changes and maintain academic and emotional stability. State Superintendent Tony Sanders said schools must meet several requirements. These include naming a contact for military families and offering staff training. Schools must also follow the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. They must provide transition programs and resources. More than 15,000 military connected students were enrolled in Illinois during the 2024 to 2025 school year. Applications for the 2025 to 2026 school year are due May 24. Decisions are expected before Veterans Day in fall 2026. Schools that qualify will receive the designation for three years and will be listed on the state website.
