McCombie Proposes UTV Pilot Program For Illinois Roadways

SPRINGFIELD — House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has introduced legislation in the Illinois House to create a pilot program allowing limited use of utility terrain vehicles on state roadways. The proposal, filed as an amendment to House Bill 2265, would test a structured system for UTV access as use of the vehicles grows for recreation and transportation. McCombie said she believes residents should be able to use public roads and pointed to potential economic benefits already seen in neighboring states that allow similar access. The plan includes safety standards as part of the pilot program in response to concerns raised by opponents. McCombie said the current lack of consistent rules creates safety issues as more UTVs appear on roadways.
