POLO – Recent storms across Northern and Central Illinois left some cornfields flattened, raising concerns about harvest conditions. Illinois Farm Bureau President Brian Duncan, back from a trip to Washington, D.C., surveyed his fields and noted that while some crops are bent, much of the corn may recover.
“Corn is an amazing plant,” he said.
“It will right itself to a certain extent. It will be what we call gooseneck, but it will make harvest a challenge,” Duncan said, adding that while some areas were hit harder than others, the rain was welcome. “It depends on where the plant is at, how close to pollination. Right now, the further away from pollination, if it’s down real bad, the better it is, give itself a chance to get right and then pollinate.”
