Illinois House Advances Education Requirement and Health Insurance Coverage Measure

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois lawmakers are advancing two separate measures that would expand education requirements in schools and health insurance coverage across the state. One proposal approved by House Democrats would require elementary and high school students to receive instruction in Latin American history as part of social studies classes beginning with the 2027 to 2028 school year. Supporters say the change would expand classroom coverage of cultural and historical topics statewide. In a separate measure, the Illinois House unanimously approved legislation that would require most health insurance plans to cover medically necessary coronary calcium scans every 36 months for adults age 40 and older starting in 2028. The proposal now moves to the Illinois Senate for further consideration.
