SPRINGFIELD – Illinois officials are inviting residents to take part in a statewide storytelling project called Illinois Voices 250 to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The program is led by the Illinois America 250 Commission in partnership with Illinois Humanities and StoryCorps Studios and will collect recorded conversations from people across the state. Officials said the recordings will be preserved at the U.S. Library of Congress as part of a long term archive. Residents can participate at community recording events or submit conversations online at no cost. Organizers said the project will gather stories from all 102 counties and reflect a wide range of experiences and perspectives. Illinois Humanities plans to travel across the state through August to record conversations as part of the effort. The commission was created by state law to coordinate a statewide observance and is supported by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
