SPRINGFIELD — New data from the Illinois State Board of Education shows continued improvement in filling educator positions across Illinois during the 2025 26 school year, with fewer unfilled jobs and lower vacancy rates across all major school staffing categories. The statewide teacher vacancy rate fell 24 percent, dropping from 2.76 percent last year to 2.1 percent, with 2,943 unfilled teacher positions reported as of Oct. 1, 2025, compared to 3,864 the year before. The report also showed 167 unfilled administrative positions, 2,134 paraprofessional vacancies, and 964 school support staff openings, with state officials crediting a $120 million Teacher Vacancy Grant program aimed at helping districts recruit and retain staff in high need areas.
