ROCHELLE – Allegations of animal cruelty at a property in Ogle County have sparked public outrage, legal action, and pushback from county officials. Animal rights group SHARK claims it has documented repeated abuse at a rodeo held on Ritchie Road, including injuries to steers and horses, and a lack of veterinary care. The group’s campaigns director, Jodie Wiederkehr, has been charged with two felonies and one misdemeanor for allegedly filing false reports and making repeated calls to authorities. Bruce Larson, Ogle County Board Chairman said they cannot revoke the 2012 special use permit for the rodeo without due process and confirmed violations. The Illinois Department of Agriculture reportedly declined to investigate, citing legal limits on regulating rodeos. Officials also referenced a letter from the Illinois Attorney General’s Civil Rights Bureau cautioning against discriminatory enforcement tied to cultural events. Wiederkehr is scheduled to appear in court July 11th.
