Illinois Comptroller Warns of Tax Scams During Filing Season

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is warning taxpayers to be cautious of scams targeting personal and financial information during the tax filing season. Reports show that nearly a quarter of surveyed taxpayers have lost money to fraud, with an average loss of $1,020. Scammers often pose as the Internal Revenue Service or the Illinois Department of Revenue, contacting individuals by phone, text, or email and pressuring them for sensitive data. Common schemes include fake refund notifications, bogus tax professionals on social media, and calls demanding immediate payment or tax documents. The IRS and Illinois Department of Revenue advise verifying all communications through official channels and avoiding suspicious links. Taxpayers can track state refunds through the Illinois Office of Comptroller’s Find My Refund tool, and the deadline to file income taxes is April 15.
