ROCHELLE — A juvenile suffered minor injuries after being bumped by a vehicle Wednesday around 3:20 p.m. at the intersection of School Avenue and Turkington Terrace, according to Rochelle Fire Chief Dave Sawlsville. Police and fire crews initially received a report of two juveniles hit but determined only one was involved. Sawlsville said a school bus traveling west had just cleared the crosswalk when two juveniles reportedly crossed north and stepped into the path of a vehicle heading east toward the middle school, striking one child in the crosswalk. Authorities note that after an investigation, they determined that the driver was traveling below the speed limit, and there was no way for the driver to see the children when they appeared from behind the bus.
“We had a near miss today, and so as a result of that near miss, we’d just like to remind the kids to always look both ways before crossing the street,” Sawlsville said.
One juvenile was released to a parent and the other was transported to an area hospital as a precaution. No citations were issued.
