State Police Step Up Enforcement To Promote Safe Driving Over New Year

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois transportation and law enforcement officials are increasing patrols statewide as 2025 ends to reduce impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and seat belt violations during New Year travel. The Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police say the effort is focused on keeping drivers and passengers safe as people head into 2026. Provisional IDOT data show 1,123 people have died in traffic crashes in Illinois through Dec. 18, which is 10 fewer than the same period last year. Officials are urging drivers to avoid alcohol, cannabis and drugs before driving, buckle up, slow down and use sober ride programs, taxis or ride sharing services when needed. The stepped up enforcement is funded through federal safety grants and is supported by a statewide public awareness campaign that highlights the risks of impaired and distracted driving and other roadway dangers.
