SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Illinois Conservation Police are encouraging boaters to wear life jackets and stay sober on the water as Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the summer boating season. There were 63 reported boating accidents in 2024 in Illinois that caused 15 deaths and 32 injuries. Most incidents occurred on weekends in clear conditions and involved experienced but untrained operators. Alcohol played a role in four of the 15 fatalities, and conservation police made 84 arrests for operating under the influence.
