Giannoulias Launches Statewide Organ Donor Campaign

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has launched a statewide public awareness campaign encouraging residents to become organ and tissue donors. The campaign will run on television, radio, digital and social media platforms and encourages Illinoisans to join the state’s Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. More than 7 million people are currently registered as donors in Illinois, with more than 20,000 new registrations each month at Secretary of State facilities. More than 4,000 Illinois residents are waiting for transplants, and about 300 people die each year while waiting. A single donor can save or improve as many as 25 lives. Residents can register when obtaining or renewing a driver’s license or state ID at an Illinois Secretary of State facility. The registry also is available online or by phone.
