First Human West Nile Virus Case Reported in DeKalb County This Year

DEKALB — The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in DeKalb County this week, part of 94 cases reported statewide so far in 2025, including three deaths. In response, the Village of Kirkland will spray for mosquitoes Saturday night. Health officials urge residents to drain standing water, use EPA-approved repellents, limit outdoor activity at dusk and dawn, and repair window screens. While most infected people show no symptoms, illness can range from mild fever and rash to severe complications such as brain inflammation, paralysis or death.
