Byron Public Safety Committee Discusses E-Bikes and Police Update

BYRON — The Byron Public Safety Committee met Wednesday to review possible regulations on e-bikes and electric scooters. Byron Police Chief Jeremy Boehle described the changes and amendments that were made in the proposed legislation, which had to be adapted due to the changing technology and speeds in which the vehicles travel. The council suggested that the recreation paths around the schools should remain accessible to E-Bikes, and debated whether they should require helmets for all ages. With current state law, E-Bikes would not be allowed on city sidewalks. The new legislation will be reviewed by the city attorney to be brought back to the council for further discussion on a future date.
