CHICAGO — Illinois is observing Rail Safety Week this week as Governor JB Pritzker proclaimed the 12th annual statewide effort to reduce collisions at rail crossings and along train tracks. The Illinois Commerce Commission and Operation Lifesaver are leading outreach with law enforcement, first responders, and rail companies to promote safety near the state’s 7,000 miles of tracks and 10,000 public crossings. In 2024, Illinois reported 104 collisions at public highway-rail crossings that caused 20 deaths and 52 injuries, with most incidents occurring where warning devices were already in place.
