Illinois Opens New Licensing Pathway for International Physicians

CHICAGO — The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced a new licensing process allowing internationally trained physicians to practice in Illinois under supervision as they work toward full licensure. The International Medical Graduate Limited License is valid for two years and requires practice under a licensed physician at an approved institution, after which applicants may seek a restricted license that permits more independent practice in shortage areas. Following two additional years, they may apply for full medical licensure. State officials said the process is intended to address physician shortages, expand access to care and integrate skilled professionals into the health care workforce.
