CHICAGO — Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Revenue are reminding families and educators that education-related tax credits are available when filing 2025 Illinois income tax returns. Parents and guardians of K-12 students may claim up to $750 per household through the Education Expense Credit, which covers costs such as tuition, book rentals, and lab fees, while teachers and school staff working at least 900 hours during the school year may claim up to $500, or $1,000 for married couples filing jointly, through the Instructional Materials and Supplies Tax Credit. In 2024, more than 197,000 households claimed over $64 million through the Education Expense Credit and nearly 82,000 educators received more than $35 million through the supplies credit.
