CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul joined a coalition of 17 state attorneys general, the city of Chicago, New York City, and the California Air Resources Board in opposing a federal proposal to repeal 2024 standards that limit mercury and other hazardous air pollutants from coal- and oil-fired power plants. The coalition said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s plan to revert to 2012 limits would increase toxic emissions linked to serious health risks, especially for pregnant women and children, and harm the environment, including waterways such as Lake Michigan. They also argued the repeal would be unlawful because it fails to account for advances in pollution control technologies.
