Illinois Bans Use of AI in Therapy Services Under New Law

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois has enacted a new law banning the use of artificial intelligence for providing therapy or making mental health decisions. Signed by Governor JB Pritzker, the Wellness and Oversight for Psychological Resources Act prohibits AI from replacing licensed professionals in delivering care, though it allows AI use for administrative support. The law is intended to protect patients from unregulated technology and safeguard the roles of trained mental health providers, especially as concerns grow over AI chatbot use among vulnerable populations. The law took effect immediately and includes penalties of up to $10,000 for violations.
