Students Learn Role Of Farmers In Making Candy Through Classroom Program

OREGON — Students in Ogle and Carroll counties took part in an Agriculture in the Classroom program that showed how multiple types of farmers contribute to making a common candy. Organizers said students learned that at least five types of farmers are needed to produce the ingredients found in a Tootsie Roll, including those who grow sugar, corn, soybeans, dairy products, and cocoa. The program included lessons on how each ingredient is produced, along with hands-on activities where older students made candy and younger students created classroom projects. The program reached 578 students across several schools, with help from local high school agriculture students, and was organized through University of Illinois Extension in partnership with local farm and soil and water groups to increase awareness of agriculture and its role in daily life.
