State Urges Electronic Filing This Tax Season

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Revenue is advising taxpayers on preparations for the upcoming 2023 state income tax filing season. Director David Harris urges electronic filing for the fastest refunds, emphasizing the need for necessary documents such as AGI from the 2024 IL-1040, federal tax return copies, W-2s, 1099s, and other relevant records. Taxpayers can explore various credits like the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Illinois K-12 Education Expense Credit, and Property Tax Credit to reduce taxes owed. Filing options include MyTax Illinois, tax-prep software, tax professionals, or the paper Form IL-1040. Electronic filing and direct deposit are encouraged for faster processing and refund issuance, with a reminder of the automatic six-month extension available, though taxes owed must be paid by April 15, 2026, to avoid penalties.
