Police Remind Residents To Take Steps To Prevent Vehicle Theft As Cold Weather Returns

DEKALB — The DeKalb Police Department is reminding residents to take simple steps to reduce the risk of vehicle theft and burglaries as colder weather returns, noting many cases are crimes of opportunity involving unlocked vehicles or items left in plain view. Police advise drivers to never leave vehicles running and unattended, to lock cars at all times including in driveways, and to avoid leaving spare keys inside. Residents are also urged to remove valuables such as electronics, wallets, purses, cash and keys from sight, keep garage doors closed and locked when away, and leave exterior lights on after dark. Police ask anyone who sees suspicious activity to report it immediately and say tips related to vehicle thefts or burglaries can be reported to local law enforcement.
