SPRINGFIELD - With warmer weather comes motorcycles, and the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and motorcycle safety organizations want to remind everyone that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Motorcycle crashes account for over 10% of fatal crashes statewide each year. All riders are urged to take precautions to increase their visibility. Earlier this month Rochelle Mayor John Bearrows presented a certificate to ABATE of Illinois, A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education, to encourage motorcycle safety. Recommendations include wearing appropriate protective gear, performing regular maintenance checks and enrolling in IDOT's free motorcycle safety courses to learn or brush up on riding skills.
