Michigan Man Charged In Killing of Missing Wife Nearly 40 Years In Joliet

JOLIET –  A Michigan man is charged in the killing and disappearance of his wife nearly 40 years ago in Joliet.  Gilbert Bernal Senior was indicted on a murder charge.  Prosecutors say Joan Bernal was last seen alive in December 1988.  It is believed that Gilbert and his wife had a domestic violence incident at their home before a planned family trip to Texas.  At the time, Gilbert reported her missing, claiming he left her at a bus stop in McAlister, Oklahoma.  However, Joan’s body has never been found.  Gilbert was taken into custody last month at his home in Flint, Michigan.
