McCombie Pushes Illinois to Participate in Federal School Choice Program

SPRINGFIELD – House Minority Leader Tony McCombie is advocating for Illinois to participate in the federal Educational Choice for Children Act, which provides a tax credit for donations to approved scholarship organizations. McCombie filed two bills directing the State Board of Education to create and share a list of qualifying scholarship organizations to allow Illinois students to access the federal tax credit. The law, signed by President Donald Trump in 2025, covers tutoring, enrollment fees, educational therapies, and other academic programs, but Illinois has not yet opted in, unlike at least 28 other states. The state has until January 1, 2027, to participate, and McCombie plans to continue efforts to expand educational options for families.
