SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Liquor Control Commission is reminding residents to designate a sober driver this December as part of National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. The holiday season sees increased alcohol consumption, contributing to higher risks of impaired driving. From 2019 to 2023, nearly 5,000 people died in alcohol-impaired crashes during December, including 1,038 in 2023 alone. The commission encourages drivers to plan safe travel, use rideshares or public transportation, assign a designated driver, pace alcoholic drinks with water, or choose non-alcoholic options. Increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints are in place statewide to reduce accidents and protect drivers and pedestrians.
