Illinois Marks Elder Abuse Awareness Day as Reports Rise

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois will recognize Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 as the state continues to see rising reports of mistreatment toward older adults. The Department on Aging is encouraging residents to learn the warning signs of elder abuse, which can include physical, emotional, sexual, or financial harm, and to report suspected cases through the state’s 24-hour Adult Protective Services hotline. In 2024, APS agencies received over 18,000 reports involving older adults and about 4,000 involving younger adults with disabilities. A statewide public service announcement and a proclamation by the governor are part of this year’s awareness efforts.
