SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois State Police reports all 169 public safety answering points across the state have completed the transition to Next Generation 911 service, marking the end of a multi year effort that began in June 2022 and concluded March 4, 2026. The upgraded system replaces older voice based networks with internet based technology that improves call routing based on a caller’s location and reduces delays in emergency response. The system also allows calls to be rerouted during outages and supports expanded Text to 911 services for greater access. Officials say the upgrade will provide more reliable and efficient emergency communications statewide.
