CHICAGO – Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul secured a court order blocking the federal government from imposing millions of dollars in penalties on states over their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program operations. The U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon temporarily halted the penalties, protecting SNAP programs in Illinois and nationwide while a lawsuit filed by Raoul and 20 other attorneys general proceeds. The lawsuit challenges federal actions targeting SNAP benefits for lawful permanent residents, including former refugees and asylees, and ensures the programs can continue providing food assistance to families and support for local grocers.
