Horse Rescued From Floodwaters Near Marengo

MARENGO — Crews from the Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts rescued a horse stranded in floodwaters along Coon Creek early Saturday after overnight storms caused the creek to overflow its banks. Firefighters found the horse about 600 feet from shore on a small peninsula surrounded by fast moving water estimated at 15 feet deep. Crews used a boat to reach the animal and transport a veterinarian across the creek to begin care for hypothermia. Additional resources were requested through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, bringing swiftwater technicians and more personnel to the scene. The horse was guided across the creek and brought to shore. About two dozen responders then moved the animal to a roadway and loaded it into a trailer for continued veterinary care.

Officials said Dr. Nicky Wessel of Cutting Edge Equine Veterinary Services and the Wisconsin Large Animal Emergency Response Technical Response Team assisted in the response along with other agencies and dispatchers.
