Hemstock Road Bridge Closed Due to Deterioration

HILLCREST — The Hemstock Road Bridge over the Kyte River has been closed between Windmill Drive and South Queens Road near Hillcrest after inspections revealed severe corrosion in the steel piles supporting the structure. Baxter & Woodman engineers found all eight pilings exposed and deteriorated, with two no longer supporting the bridge and beam facia showing cracks. The bridge, built 50 years ago, could be temporarily repaired for about $100,000, but engineers recommended full replacement, which could cost around $1 million. The village would be responsible for 20 percent of the cost if state or federal funding is obtained. IDOT approval is required for any repairs, which could take six months, while full replacement may take three to four years. Village officials are developing design-build plans to solicit contractor bids for repairs while seeking long-term funding for replacement, potentially available in 2028.
