DIXON — Reagan Mass Transit District continues to pursue fixed bus routes in Dixon and Rochelle as officials work to secure funding and equipment needed to launch the services. Studies completed for both communities found that fixed routes would help meet transportation needs, with plans calling for two routes in Dixon and a single route in Rochelle.
Executive Director Greg Gates said the projects remain a priority despite recent efforts focused on expanding service into Whiteside County. “We are still moving forward in the direction of a fixed route for both Rochelle as well as the city of Dixon. What it’s really coming down to is financially trying to find some operational funds to support the rollout of those two fixed systems, plus we’ll need some different buses to actually run those two fixed routes.”
Proposed plans call for routes operating from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, connecting residential areas, shopping destinations, medical facilities and employment centers. Officials are exploring state, federal and local funding sources to help cover the cost of vehicles, bus stops, technology and staffing needed to operate the routes.
