Rochelle Approves Utility Tax Changes Through 2032

ROCHELLE — The Rochelle City Council extended city utility taxes through December 2032 and increasing electricity and gas tax rates beginning in 2027. City officials said the additional revenue would help pay for sidewalk repairs, accessibility ramps, street improvements and other infrastructure projects as construction costs continue to rise. The proposed electricity tax increase is expected to generate about $84,000 more per year, while the gas tax increase would add about $16,000 annually. Officials said the average residential electric customer would see an increase of about $1.34 per month starting in 2027. The measure passed 6-1, with Mayor John Bearrows giving the only no vote.
