BYRON – There may be another funding source to illuminate the bridge over the Rock River in Byron. Byron Mayor John Rickard said he had a conversation with the Region 1 Planning Council, who noted that federal funding may be available to relight the Route 72 bridge, though any plan must be approved by IDOT in Springfield. The bridge previously had lights, but they were removed due to repeated damage from wide loads and safety concerns, which also ended the possibility of grandfathering in new or replacement fixtures. IDOT rules require lighting exclusive to walkways that do not spill over into the traffic lanes. The city would likely need a lighting study before moving forward with any proposal.
