When Preparing For Disaster, Don’t Forget Your Pets

SPRINGFIELD – June is Pet Preparedness Month, the perfect time to make or update a pet preparedness kit. Talk to neighbors, friends, or family about a backup plan for your pets in an emergency. “No one wants to leave a pet behind in an emergency,” said Alicia Tate-Nadeau, Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director. A pet preparedness kit should keep your pets comfortable for at least three days whether you’re sheltering in place or evacuating. If you’re not home, ensure someone you trust can care for your pets and their kits. Important items for the kit include food, water, waste bags, bedding, toys, leashes, medications, and medical records. Spending an hour on preparation can make a huge difference for your pets in a disaster.
